Automated Deburring with Industrial Robots

Background

The technology of deburring with industrial robots is used throughout the foundry market in order to precisely, quickly, and efficiently remove sprues, runners, and other process-relevant excess material after components are cast.

What does deburring mean?

So-called flash or projections can form at edges during the various casting processes. These edges, which can be sharp, may not only impair the functioning of the end product but also increase the risk of injury. For example Thin-walled structural components have an increasing high geometric complexity based on higher technological demands and advanced CAD applications. These components are used particularly in the aviation and aerospace industry.

For this reason, when manufacturing metal parts, these projections must be removed during the finishing process. This technology is referred to as deburring or trimming.

Overview

Industrial robots have the necessary degrees of freedom for the tool movement and are available flexibility for deburring of all sharp workpiece edges. Employing a robot for deburring also creates a safer work environment, as this task can be hazardous.

For this, INOVAITEC developed Robotics software "RobotTech" that is able to automatically generate a robot program for deburring rough edges for machined parts, engine blocks, or gears. The software can also be used for any other process that requires smoothing of edges or surfaces using a variety of tools and techniques, including milling, rotary files, abrasive disks, brushes, and pads.

The software is used in conjunction with a MANUTEC R16 robot and a Mitsubishi RV-6S robot for the structural processing of workpieces. The promising results demonstrate that it‘s possible to generate small edges on the surface with robots.

Advantages of RobotTech software for robotic deburring applications

Achieve consistent results, lower cycle times, and increase productivity by programming deburring robots with RobotTech. Our offline robot programming software ensures consistent results, lowers cycle times, and boosts productivity when deburring gears, engine blocks, or other machined parts.

With RobotTech, you can:
  • Automatically generate robot trajectories from your CAD model, then easily modify them to adjust tool speed, feed rate, cut depth, and more
  • Program and manage tool tilt directions for optimal surface contact, which improves surface finish quality and extends tool life
  • Automate tool orientation to minimize wrist rotation and maximize robot reach
  • Program, simulate, and use multiple deburring tools, including collision control
  • Compensate for actual part setup with advanced calibration tools
